The State spent nearly €416 million on accommodation for asylum seekers and Ukrainian refugees during the first three months of 2025, according to the latest Government figures. Cape Wrath Hotel Unlimited, the company that runs Dublin’s Citywest Hotel housing international protection applicants (IPAs) and Ukrainian refugees, received €18.7 million between January and March this year.

On Monday, preparatory works began at the former site of the mother and baby institution in Tuam, Co Galway in advance of the long-awaited excavation to identify the remains of nearly 800 infants. The excavation, which is due to start in mid-July, takes place 11 years after research by local historian Catherine Corless found 796 children had died at the institution run by the Bon Secours religious order between 1925-1961.

On Sunday night, 57-year-old Vance Boelter was arrested and charged with murder following the largest manhunt in the history of the US state of Minnesota. Mr Boelter is suspected of shooting and killing a Democratic politician and her husband and of shooting and wounding a Democratic senator and his wife on Saturday.

Government delays in processing refugee family reunification applications are having a “devastating” impact on families torn apart by war and violence, a solicitor has warned. In the case of Afghan applicants, many are awaiting a decision in Pakistan where they face deportation or forced return, says Andrea Martin, a retired solicitor who now works with Afghan refugees in Ireland.

Families served with deportation orders in recent months, including women and children, are at “serious risk of destitution due to a sudden loss of supports”, the Irish Refugee Council (IRC) has warned. The organisation said it was “deeply concerned” about the wellbeing of families who had their daily expenses allowance and medical card suddenly withdrawn following the issuance of a deportation order. Those with a right to work also have to cease employment immediately, it said.
