CAPE GIRARDEAU – It was supposed to be a game remembered for perpetuity. But instead, it will live in disappointment for Southeast Missouri State football and its diehard fans. With just its second-ever FCS playoff victory in reach, SEMO (9-4) suffered a 35-27 loss to Illinois State (10-3) in the opening round Saturday, Nov. 30, at Houck Field. The Redbirds dominated SEMO in the final three quarters – capitalizing on a plethora of offensive mistakes by a Redhawks team that looked overmatched.
SEMO student newspaper staffers named finalists for five national awards

Seven staff members of the Arrow, Southeast Missouri State Universitys student newspaper, have been named national finalists for the College Media Associations (CMA) annual Pinnacle Awards. The Arrow is in contention for five awards across the Video/Audio, Reporting and Sports categories. According to the CMA, the Pinnacle Awards honor the best college media organizations and individual work.
Harry Rediger, former Cape mayor, succumbs to cancer at age 86

As his final term as mayor of Cape Girardeau wound toward an end, Harry Rediger championed a community model focused on involvement, cooperation and personal investment Purpose Built. Rediger's decades of public service, his career with JCPenney and his long history of volunteerism mirrored that idea. Rediger died Sunday, Sept. 22. He was 86. The Southeast Missourian will be launching a new digital platform at www.semissourian.com on Tuesday, Sept. 24, around 10 a.m., management said. Current users will need to verify their email address on the site to gain access. When a current subscriber goes to semissourian.com on Tuesday, they will be asked to log in by putting in their email address, said Joyce Cliff, Southeast Missourian circulation manager.
Cape mother organizing event to recognize those lost tragically

A Cape Girardeau mother is organizing an event to recognize people lost in tragedies. Donna Colyer-Jones lost her daughter, Tesquonna Hill, to a homicide in St. Louis on Aug. 10, she said. The event will be held to recognize her birthday at Capaha Park 3 p.m. on Sept. 21. She said guest speakers have been invited to share their testimonies.
Saxony Lutheran High School cancels classes and activities due to water main break

Saxony Lutheran High School is canceling classes on Thursday due to a broken water main creating multiple leaks on campus. According to social media communication from the school, repairs will begin on Thursday that will require water to the building to be shut off. "This will hopefully allow the repair to be made over the next two days as we were already out of school on Friday, September 20, for the East Perry Community Fair," the Facebook post announcing the cancelation said.
Local law enforcement deems Monday's potential social media threat toward Perry County Schools non-credible

Perry County District No. 32 Schools initiated a preventive lockdown Monday morning after administrators were made aware of a potential threat made on social media. According to a release sent to district families, local law enforcement agencies found that the social media post was not a credible threat, and may have originated from a post targeting schools in Texas.
See Me Series at SEMO explores diversity through 'Hidden Figures'

Southeast Missouri State Universitys Department of Mass Media will present its fourth annual See Me Series from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30, at Rose Theater. The theme of the free event is Hidden Figures, which is inspired by a 2016 film that tells the remarkable story of three African American women who made vital contributions to NASAs space missions despite facing both racial and gender-based challenges.
U.S. Department of State selects SEMO faculty member for English Language Specialist Project

Southeast Missouri State University faculty member Sarah Dietrich was recently selected for the U.S. State Departments English Language Specialist Program. Dietrich, who has served as co-coordinator of the masters in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) with SEMOs English Department since 2017, will develop and facilitate a 12-week project teaching language for civil society and media literacy in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.
