On the morning of January 15, the Chief of Staff of the Armada (AJEMA), Admiral General Antonio Piñeiro, was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Guardia Civil (Gendarmerie). The decoration ceremony took place at the headquarters of the Directorate General of the Guardia Civil in Madrid, presided over by its Director General, Mercedes Gonzalez.

The training ship ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ began her 97th Training Cruise on January 11 from the port of Cádiz, in a poignant ceremony that marked the beginning of a voyage of more than six months around the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This cruise has a special character since Her Royal Highness the Princess of Asturias Leonor de Borbón, as a first-class midshipman, embarked to continue with her military training in the Armada.

The ‘Hespérides’ departed from Cartagena (SE Spain) on November 20 to begin her transit towards the South Atlantic in support of the 29th Spanish Antarctic Campaign. During the voyage, a series of activities were organized like internal training with both, surveillance and general-purpose exercises, conferences in various fields, etc. During the morning of December 13, the ‘Hespérides’ arrived at the Argentine port of Mar del Plata, being the first port-call made by the ship since her departure.
