On the last weekend of January, a little-known Chinese company upended the tech world’s established order. DeepSeek, a Hangzhou-based artificial intelligence (AI) startup, rattled Silicon Valley giants and sent shockwaves through global markets after releasing its AI assistant. By the end of the weekend, the AI assistant had topped the downloads chart on both Apple Inc.’s App Store and Google’s Play Store, even straining DeepSeek’s own systems to the point of temporary shutdown.

At the heart of it is TS-COP, the police department’s flagship mobile application that allows the police to control the citizenry. The state also has over a million cameras and a large command and control centre that can process and store the information from all these cameras. These surveillance infrastructures power real-time policing.

The Telangana Police networks have been hacked by a threat actor who goes by the name of Adm1nFr1end on BreachForums. The threat actor has been selling access to both citizen data and internal police data. It shared only a few data modules inside these complex policing network systems. The breach could have been much worse because the Telangana Police networks were full of security loopholes and had no major security practices.

This is the same actor who also published details of the breach of another Telangana Police app HawkEye and the Telangana Police SMS Service.
