I used to be an active social justice legislator, a progressive liberal activist for years. On Oct. 7, 2023, I became just a Jew. As coordinated protests cheering on Hamas sprouted like wildfires mere hours after the historic terrorist attack in Israel while families were still in hiding, our world went mad. Days later, protestors marched in downtown Clayton, the backyard of a large Jewish community, with chants and signs to “cleanse the world.”Few people expressed outrage.

The office has been cleaned out, campaign photos and signs stripped from the walls, and goodbye hugs given to college interns and staff. Just a few weeks ago, St. Louis Democratic primary voters chose a new candidate, St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell, to represent the 1st Congressional District in Washington. It was far from a “normal” primary campaign. Oct. 7 changed the world in ways we never saw coming.

Among all the other reasons one goes to Paris on holiday, I had one primary mission during my long-planned bucket-list trip there last month with my daughter. I was compelled to visit the Wall of Names at the Shoah Memorial, in the old Jewish quarter of Marais, to say a prayer in person for 11-year-old Rosi, murdered at Auschwitz in 1944.

For years, she has stared at me every time I walk down my hallway. Gustel, barely 14 years old, stands out among her nine sisters, which include my late husband’s Oma Sophie, in the one remaining family photo from Germany taken in 1910. Self-assured with long lustrous hair and a cocky posture signifying an eagerness to take on the world, Gustel’s gaze is hard to ignore. The first time I saw this huge portrait over a cousin’s fireplace, I was completely mesmerized by her. Then I learned her story.

Exactly 23 years ago on Mother’s Day, I marched in the Million Mom March alongside numerous Jewish organizations in Washington, D.C. after my first-grade daughter went on national television talking about her fear of guns in her school. Nothing has changed. Gun violence is our accepted normal and no one is safe. Shootings happen every day, somewhere. But you know that. The Gun Violence Archive, the national entity tracking gun violence stats, reports we have had 232 mass shootings to date in 2023.
