    It might certainly feel as though love, by now, has been explored in song from every conceivable angle. What more can there be to say? Plenty, it turns out, for as keen an observer and as bold a songwriter as Rose Cousins. But on Conditions of Love, Vol. 1, Cousins doesn’t tell about love so much as she shows what it can feel like, good and bad. With just her voice and piano, she walks gently through anticipation, exhilaration, contentment, frustration, and loss.

    It’s hard to put a label on Sierra Hull. She grew up in bluegrass, but she and her mandolin have stretched those roots far beyond any one genre. She’s found success as a solo artist, but she revels in collaborations. She emerged as a child prodigy, debuting at the Grand Ole Opry at age 10, playing Carnegie Hall when she was 12, and signing with Rounder Records at 13; but at 33 she is still breaking new ground.

    EDITOR’S NOTE: Chuck Prophet and ¿Qiensave?’s Wake the Dead came out Oct. 25 on Yep Roc Records. We’re reviewing it now as part of a year-end round up of some of the best albums we missed along the way this year. Sidelined from touring and most everything else after a 2022 cancer diagnosis and then treatment, San Francisco singer-songwriter Chuck Prophet had a lot of time to listen. Really listen.

    It’s hard to know where to begin this column. I think I’d better break with convention and begin with the end: This is goodbye. Today is my last day on staff at No Depression, after 11 years of various little jobs here that eventually added up to one big job as assistant editor, which mostly has entailed the care and feeding of our website.
