I got home late the other evening. I was tired and after doing whatever I had to do in the kitchen, all I really wanted to do was go to bed. I cut off the lights and began climbing the stairs. That’s when I heard it. The distinctive sound of a bird chirping. Chirp! Followed by about a 10-second delay and then again chirp. Now I am proud of my hearing. And the first thing I thought was: what kind of bird is chirping/tweeting at night? Most birds normally go to sleep.

I had the misfortune of breaking my car windshield last week. Thankfully a glass repair company is not far from my house and I was able to drive over to get it replaced. The company was able to take the city sticker off the broken windshield and put it on to the new windshield. But what they didn’t do was to transfer the two little sticky pieces that held my iPass up in the window.

Well it’s been three months, give or take, since Mayor Brandon Johnson took office. There was a lot of hoopla when he won. Young, former educator and mouthpiece for the Chicago Teachers Union, former Cook County Board commissioner, a Westsider, and an Austin resident to boot, the expectations for him were high. Brandon pulled off what many never expected to happen.

As part of an agreement reached between Growing Community Media and our former staff member, Michael Romain, ownership of the Village Free Press will return to Romain during the month of September. Romain is the founder of the newspaper which serves Proviso Township. In 2022, Romain brought the newspaper to Growing Community Media which agreed to take on its publication. Following his departure from the organization in January discussions ensued on how toreturn the newspaper to Romain.

I want to continue on the subject of N’surance this week because for those companies, when there’s a loss, they are expected to quickly send out money as part of the claim to pay for the replacement of far too often dilapidated, unkempt structures.
