For many people living in rural areas of the United States, the fact that health care is not easily accessible is just a part of life. As a result, many forgo routine care or delay care for chronic illnesses, and some suffer tragedies due to the delay in receiving emergency treatment. Watching loved ones suffer through these experiences is often the impetus behind a rural student’s decision to pursue a career as a physician.
