A victory by the Lovett girls soccer team not only would earn the Lions their second consecutive championship, it would send its group of seniors off with three rings in their four seasons. “Just being able to defend our title will be an awesome experience, and I know my girls are really excited to play for another state championship,” said coach Virginia Seiler, who has taken the Lions to state championships in 2021-22 and 2024.

ROME— After fouling on her first throw and missing the grid with her second effort, Sierra Thorton had one last chance to qualify for the Class 5A discus finals. The tall freshman from Chamblee High School stepped into the circle, went through her routine and calmly tossed the shot in the middle of the field. At 111 feet, 6 inches, it wasn’t a great throw, but it didn’t need to be. It only had to be long enough to get her among the the top nine girls in order to reach the final round. “I don’t know.

When Ava Kitchings began competing in athletics as a kid, she set high goals for herself. Participation ribbons weren’t enough to satisfy her. Now the Greater Atlanta Christian junior track standout will try to check off another extremely high goal at this week’s GHSA Track and Field State Championships presented by Atlanta Track Club: Georgia’s all-classifications record in the long jump. “I’ve always strived to be the best, even when I was little,” Kitchings said.

Stewart Cink walked away from the hometown Mitsubishi Electric Classic two weeks ago feeling pretty good about his game. The former Georgia Tech star struck the ball well but couldn’t get enough putts to fall. He wound up tied for sixth in the tournament played at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth.

It was three years ago that coach Justin Marsh was approached after football practice by a student who wanted to start a bass fishing team. After being beaten down like a dad whose kids want to stop at Buc-ee’s, Marsh agreed to investigate the matter. Two years later, West Laurens won the state bass fishing championship. “Ryan Soles bounced the idea off me one day, and I was like, ‘Is that even a sport?’” Marsh said.
