There are many wild and wonderful reasons why we want to go on holiday, aren’t there? But basically they all boil down to pretty much the same thing. We want to get away from the normal, humdrum existence, the grind, the 9 to 5 world. We want to leave behind the stresses and strains of everyday living; gas bills, gardening and going to the supermarket. Instead, we want to swap it all for a taste of the better life. Or maybe that’s just me.

Seems like pretty much every week there is some new outcry about some under appreciated corner of the UK, some gorgeous part of our green and pleasant land that is just gagging to be discovered by holidaymakers. Sigh. It’s most irksome. What makes it even more irksome, is that I am now going to add to the list. By banging on, in rather glowing terms, about the half hidden, blue remembered hills of Shropshire. I do apologise, dear reader. But some things just can’t be helped.

Don’t know about you, dear reader, but I do love a holiday that does exactly what it says on the tin. Happened to me recently when I went down to Teignmouth (pronounced, “tin-muth), recently. Expect you know it. An unassuming little seaside town snuggled down on the Devon coastline. To my mind, it is an essential part of the infamous English Riviera. Which is exactly why I went there. Was in the mood for a spot of riviera indulgence, without going abroad.

Don’t know about you, dear reader, but I have got pretty ticked off with rain over the last few months. There has been far too much of the wet stuff falling all around. Things got so grim, I even jetted off in search of sunshine a couple of times. However, that was then. This is now. Now, those grey days are behind us (touch wood) and summer is bursting out all over. Like a badger with a basket full of buttercups. Which is always something to celebrate.

There are many things in life I haven’t tried yet. Often they’re too difficult to arrange, too risky to do, or just too plain stupid. However, there are many other things in life which are actually quite easy to cross off the bucket list. Going on a cruise, for instance. Never done it. No particular reason, just never got round to it. So recently, I decided to change all that, to give cruising a go, by taking my first ever river cruise.
