The first mayor of Amsterdam was appointed in 1383 in a process not dissimilar to that used in 2018, when Femke Halsema became the first woman to hold the position. Amsterdam's mayor is nominated by the minister of the interior and kingdom relations on the recommendation of the municipal council - a selection then rubber-stamped by the Dutch monarch. This makes Halsema's role officially apolitical but she has responsibility for many political things, including taxation and the police.
