A pastel paradise mere steps from Rome’s Piazza del Popolo and the high-fashion mile of Via Condotti, the Hotel de Russie, A Rocco Forte Hotel, has all the makings of an urban oasis. But the dressed-to-the-nines crowd you’ll find sipping Vespers in the property’s famous gardens make the Russie a place where cocktails and culture collide: it’s bustling, it’s fun and, more likely than not, it’s a place you’d want to be seen at. You could almost walk past the Hotel de Russie without realising it.

Could there be a more sophisticated affair than imbibing a Bellini at the 7th Floor Terrace (the ‘world’s best’, according to Princess Diana) at the Hassler Roma, before you stroll down the Spanish Steps and onto the Via Margutta, famous from Audrey Hepburn’s 1953 classic, Roman Holiday? We think not. But far from content with resting on its laurels, Rome’s most legendary hotel has its eyes on a gilded future as it enters a new era.

With its dedication to making Italian craftsmanship the lynchpin around which each guest stay revolves, and a commitment to tactile indulgence that’s perhaps unrivalled across the city, Bulgari Hotel Roma would turn heads in London or NYC – in Rome, it’s a veritable blessing. Just off the Via del Corso and around the corner from the Tiber River, Bulgari Hotel Roma overlooks the Piazza Augusto Imperatore, home to the Mausoleum of Roman Emperor Augustus.

It’s not so long ago that we made decisions about where to travel to purely on the back of what we were in search of, and which destinations promised to deliver it: the Caribbean meant beaches and rum, Alpine slopes still glistened with the promise of guaranteed snow, and cities from Miami to Dubrovnik vied with one another for tourist dollars. But change is afoot in how travel – and travellers – are perceived. And with it, a more nuanced set of motivations behind our journeys is on the horizon.

If I were in favour of clickbait, I'd mention the very famous pop star who celebrated her birthday in the Hotel de Russie's gardens until 3am in this caption. But I am not (her name is in my review, however). https://t.co/yVIoK85UT0 @HotelDeRussie @RF_Hotels #Rome

Officially completed my 10-day fast at Buchinger Wilhelmi on the shores of Germany’s Lake Constance. After having a brilliant experience at a different fasting clinic over in Austria last year, I really wanted to fast again — and it was just amazing.
