The 5,000-ton destroyer slid off a flatcar due to “inexperienced command and operational carelessness in the course of the launch,” according to the Korean Central News Agency, crushing parts of the bottom of the ship.

North Korea confirmed for the first time Monday that its troops were fighting alongside Russia in its war against Ukraine, saying they helped Moscow take back control of its Ukraine-controlled Kursk region. U.S., South Korean and Ukrainian officials have said North Korea sent as many as 12,000 troops to Russia last fall to fight in Kursk, which Ukrainian forces seized in a surprise incursion last August. North Korea had not confirmed or denied those reports until now.

By and A motorcyclist died after falling into a sinkhole in the South Korean capital, authorities said Tuesday, in the latest such fatal incident. The man in his 30s, who has not been publicly identified, was found in cardiac arrest around noon local time on Tuesday, the day after a sinkhole about 65 feet wide and 65 feet deep opened up without warning as he was driving down a street in Seoul, according to the Gangdong Fire Station.

SEOUL, South Korea — A South Korean court ruled Friday that the detention of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol was unjustified, paving the way for his release from custody even as he faces trial on insurrection charges over his failed attempt to declare martial law. Yoon, 64, will not be released immediately, his lawyers said, as prosecutors have seven days to appeal the ruling. The prosecutors’ office did not immediately comment. Yoon has been in custody since his arrest on Jan.
