The Tartu Peace Treaty, signed on 2 February 1920, was the treaty that ended the Estonian War of Independence that had started in November 1918, a few months after Estonia had declared independence on 24 February 1918. It all happened in the final months and the aftermath of the First World War when, after the capitulation of Imperial Germany, on 28 November 1918 the Soviet forces entered Estonia with the aim of reoccupying the newly independent country.

This means 5,950 more people died in Estonia than were born. The trend is nothing new, though. In 2023, for example, 10,721 babies were born, and 15,832 people died. In 2022, 11,588 babies were born and 17,245 people died in Estonia. Of the 9,646 babies born in 2024, 4,744 were girls and 4,902 boys. The interior ministry registered the birth of 142 twins – 35 pairs of boys, 54 pairs of girls and 53 mixed pairs. One set of triplets was also born in 2024.

According to the Bank of Estonia, the change to the law means that shopkeepers no longer have to give out one and two-cent coins as change, and there is no longer as much need in Estonia to circulate those coins, which people use for paying with only extremely rarely. There will be no rounding for payments made with a bank card. Estonia is the seventh country in the eurozone to introduce the rounding rule, which is intended to reduce the number of one and two-cent coins in circulation.

Lauri Veski, a team lead of consumer price statistics at the country’s official statistics agency, said the biggest impact on the consumer price index in 2024 came from price increases related to food and non-alcoholic beverages, which accounted for 23.7% of the total index rise. The prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages rose by 3.2% last year. “Among food products, the biggest rise occurred in the prices of olive oil (44%) and juices and syrups (36.7%).
