Tax specialists have a great deal to say about how African tax collectors could work better but rarely seem to ask the tax collectors themselves – and certainly not through a large-scale effort and in an open-minded approach. That is what Nyanyiwe Sulu did in 2023. She sent a questionnaire to 83 of her fellow staff members of the domestic taxes division of the Malawi Revenue Authority.

Twenty-two tax and finance professionals mostly from countries across Africa successfully completed ICTD’s last module for the Research on Tax and Development course in Accra earlier this month. The course, which has been delivered by ICTD for nearly ten years, equips participants with a strong understanding of the current tax and development landscape, and teaches them basic research methodologies, supporting them to develop their own research projects.

“It is important for all taxpayers, including the ultra-high-net-worth individuals, to contribute their fair share in taxes,” said the finance ministers and central bankers in a joint statement marking the conclusion of two days of meeting in Brazil. Brazil, which this year is presiding over the G20, is spear-heading global discussions on taxing the ultra-rich with a specific aim of raising international funds to tackle climate change.
