Nobody wants to hear that deployment makes you stronger. I was like a child with my fingers in my ears, singing, “La, la, la,” the entire way through our 2023 deployment. I didn’t want to be stronger; I just wanted my husband back. Of course, I had to put on a brave face for my children, who were six- and two-years-old at the time. But inside, I felt just like them: scared, lonely, and missing someone very important. We eventually made it through, fighting ol’ Murphy’s Law the entire way.

Going through a  Permanent Change of Station (PCS) is stressful, period. However, our most recent move was the first we’d done with a child in school and that was a new level of stress for me. Would the area in our new location be safe? How did the school perform academically? Would my child be happy in his new school? It’s natural that parents wonder about these important questions when faced with a PCS, especially when moving overseas.

Plan ahead to make children’s time with loved ones safe and happy. When traveling with children, pack plenty of snacks and patience. If you are flying, you may pre-board to give your child time to get settled.
