People in their 40s face peak pensioner poverty by the time they retire in 2042 and beyond. Worryingly, 17 years is just a twinkling of an eye when it comes to retirement planning. And a question mark hangs over the continued existence of the state pension in its present form. Unless auto-enrolment contributions rise within the lifetime of this parliament, this cohort will face dire penury in their old age.

It is nearly 10 years since the pensions freedoms revolution initiated by George Osborne, then chancellor of the exchequer, began in April 2015. Today, the huge range of pension choices can leave many floundering and worse still, even making irrevocable mistakes, without easy access to advice.

After all, at 68 I have savings built up over my career that I will rely on should I ever decide to retire (not any time soon, I hope). Inflation perniciously erodes away the value of nest eggs. But my worries abated last week – because I spent £189,000 of my life savings on an annuity – a financial product that guarantees me an income with inflation protection for life.

St James's Park in central London. How sad such parks may lose their dedicated police officers. Austerity Mark 2 sounds even worse than Austerity Mark 1 but at least we have spring sunshine, blossoms and flowers to cheer us up.
