Estonia, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden are also all set to raise their state pension age to 70 according to new OECD research. The UK plans to raise our own state pension age rise to 67 in 2026. This week marks a minor milestone, with 20 volunteer major pension players now connected to the MoneyHelper pensions dashboard. However, no launch date has been set and nothing is expected for at least six months. The project for now remains computer ‘vapourware’. The Pensions Regulator describes pensions dashboards (paid for by pension providers) as “digital services – apps, websites or other tools – which savers will be able to use to see their pension information in one place.

People in their 40s face peak pensioner poverty by the time they retire in 2042 and beyond. Worryingly, 17 years is just a twinkling of an eye when it comes to retirement planning. And a question mark hangs over the continued existence of the state pension in its present form. Unless auto-enrolment contributions rise within the lifetime of this parliament, this cohort will face dire penury in their old age.
