West Alabama Women’s Center was one of the only places in the state where people could access abortion care before Alabama began enforcing a total abortion ban after the overturn of Roe v. Wade. Like many clinics, the center, now WAWC Healthcare—a free and sliding scale reproductive and sexual health center in Tuscaloosa—is struggling to stay afloat while the local community struggles to access care.

AbstractOn the evening of February 3, 1850 Nathaniel Hawthorne completed The Scarlet Letter. Upon finishing the last scene he read, or “tried to read it, rather” to his wife, but found this difficult task. . . . my voice swelled and heaved, as if I were tossed up and down on an ocean as it subsides after a storm. But I was in a very nervous state then, having gone through a great diversity of emotion while writing it for many months.

Editor:It’s spring and again our beloved pets turn to thoughts of love. And as cute as a new kitten or puppy can be, unfortunately, the majority of these sweethearts never find forever homes and end up in overcrowded animal shelters and worse. Here at the Socorro Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, the staff does a wonderful job of trying to get every animal a new home, but are still overwhelmed by the volume that comes through their doors.
