When he was growing up in Marion, Arthur “Scrapper” Broady knew one of his cousins as Uncle Jim. An eccentric artist who lived in New York City, Uncle Jim talked to Scrapper about stories he’d heard about an enslaved ancestor who fought in the American Revolution and was eventually emancipated. When Uncle Jim retired, Scrapper said he made it a mission to learn all he could about that ancestor. Uncle Jim continued to share his discoveries with Scrapper.

Homeless individuals are living in tents in all three of Smyth County’s towns. Town leaders are trying to find ways to balance the needs of the unhoused and their residents. Tuesday evening, the Saltville Town Council adopted an ordinance that prohibits camping on public property except in designated areas. In Chilhowie Thursday evening, that council agreed to set a public hearing on a similar ordinance.
