A lot of people in the community have been dealing with illnesses lately, the kind that’s hard to get rid of, then there have been the natural disasters that have taken homes and lives. When trouble hits, we realize what is most precious in our lives. Health, loved ones and our home comforts.

“Sometimes you will never know the value of something, until it is a memory.” – Dr. SeussJune is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. I remember when I was younger, hearing that when someone was having trouble with memory or acting differently, it was called hardening of the arteries, but now we know that it has a different name—dementia. Before working at the senior center, I was employed at a couple of assisted livings and outreach therapy programs and worked with dementia patients.

“A Mother’s love endures through all.” – Washington IrvingFor those that do not know, I lost my beautiful mother this past January, so, this will be the first Mother’s Day without her. Among other firsts, her 93rd birthday would’ve been in April, my husband and I went to Olive Garden® for dinner (her favorite restaurant), bought her favorite color of flowers (purple) and placed on her grave the weekend before her birthday.

Desperation forced their parents to thrust them into brutal adulthood. In Shahrak-e-Sabz, a settlement of makeshift mud-brick homes and tents for the displaced in Herat province that we visited last month, our researchers counted 118 girls who had been sold as child brides, and 116 families with girls waiting for buyers.
