    Starting next month, Connecticut will expand its firefighter benefits to include free enhanced cancer screenings. Gov. Ned Lamont and state Comptroller Sean Scanlon announced the new benefit on Monday. It goes into effect on May 1. State officials said it came in response to evidence that firefighters, due to their repeated exposure to smoke, toxic chemicals, and carcinogens in the line of duty, have a greater prevalence of cancer diagnoses and cancer-related deaths than the general population.

    VIDEO: Two people suffered serious injuries when a school bus smashed into a fence in Brooklyn on Wednesday morning. The victims, an 8-year-old boy and his 43-year-old mother, were rushed to Maimonides Medical Center with serious injuries, but are expected to be fine. The crash happened just before 8:30 a.m. at Bedford Avenue and Farragut Road in Ditmas Park, just feet away from the Cortelyou Early Childhood Center.

    A 17-story office building in Midtown Manhattan was evacuated Tuesday afternoon after a basement wall partially collapsed. Firefighters responded to the building on East 59th Street between Park and Lexington avenues around 12:30 p.m.The Department of Buildings says inspectors found large cracks in the foundation wall. Authorities say the wall collapse damaged the water system, cutting water to the entire building.
