It's all in the asterisk. Superficially, THUNDERBOLTS* may seem to be just that: a footnote to the rest of the MCU, a random collection of rejects from other storylines who had nowhere else to go. And to be fair, that's exactly how Marvel has been promoting it, leaning heavily into the SUICIDE SQUAD angle of a group of castoffs being recruited to work together against their will. Yet while they do end up working together (more or less, anyway), this isn’t really a team-up like the Suicide Squad.

They’ve been struggling to make a living in their own simple way, but his industrialized methodologies are capable of exploiting the land to a much greater extent, generating profits far beyond their means. Yet he’s greedy and not willing to pay them what the land is worth to him, so he resorts to harassment instead.

If you were thinking, "They couldn't make a movie like that today," there's nothing even remotely hot about that particular take. It's ice cold. It's been buried in the permafrost for so long that if you thawed it out overnight on the kitchen counter, you could still pound nails with it the next morning.

THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES was the fifth film that Clint Eastwood directed, and his second time helming a western. Yet unlike his previous four directorial efforts, it was never planned that way. In fact, nothing about THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES turned out as expected, from conception to production and beyond. It’s not quite the story that the original author wanted to tell, nor is it the film that its original director wanted to make. It’s not even what Eastwood intended when he initiated the project.
