I am struck by how the mighty have fallen when I see that Barloworld (https://www.businesslive.co.za/bd/companies/2025-04-23-pic-makes-u-turn-in-r23bn-barloworld-buyout-after-bee-concessions/) might soon be delisted from the JSE. What remains of the business is soon to be sold to its CEO and a little-known consortium. I used to visit Barlow Park to see top executives such as Robbie Williams (not that one), Derek Cooper and Warren Clewlow himself.

Santam is the only full service property and casualty insurer on the JSE. Its market cap is about half that of Outsurance. But the latter remains predominantly a personal lines motor insurer, with modest exposure into the SME market.

My career in journalism started at the height of the Reagan/Thatcher free-market era. At the Financial Mail under Stephen Mulholland and Nigel Bruce, US ideologues such as Don Caldwell and Richard Grant were recruited. They had the dual role of writing “on message” copy and training us on the benefits of free market policies, what we now refer to as the Washington Consensus. So it seems particularly odd to me that the US Republican government under President Donald Trump is so keen on tariffs.

I am not a full time employee anymore so I can also be candid

@Scranston I’m not a journo Stephen, I mean everything that I say. Perhaps your eternal immersion in journalism makes it hard for you to discern? I have no idea what you are referencing, but unlike your ilk, I will look it up. As for your slur, you remind me of Neville Chamberlain

I have been called many things A Nazi, Commie and Psychopath. My former chairman even called me an antisemite (no apology yet). But I just had the ultimate insult; Clinton. "You sound like MSNBC."

@Scranston Murdoch will flip faster than Jimmy Manyi for an opportunity…. He is a nothing man… rich, but despised by all.

Same was true of William Randolph Hearst. But he got America into a rare colonial war in Cuba, one of very few American colonies whatever you might have heard.
