WORLD FOOD DAY 2024 OP-ED Under the Constitution, the duty to ensure that everyone has sufficient food and water falls squarely upon the government. And it’s here that we look most desperately for leadership. The 16th of October 2024 is the 45th World Food Day, and the 30th since South Africa’s transition to democracy in 1994. What progress has been made on the constitutional right of everyone to “access to sufficient food”, and the constitutional right of every child to “basic nutrition”?

But, despite record food production, the trend is reversing, with around 828 million people affected by hunger globally in 2021 – an increase of 46 million from 2020 and 150 million from 2019. The problem is not confined to low-income countries. Large numbers of people in wealthier countries like the United Kingdom, South Africa, and Brazil are unable to meet their basic nutritional needs.
