In the monthly instalment of nature walks in Blackpool, Stephen Dunstan takes his binoculars to the Promenade. This three mile stroll gives the chance to enjoy colourful Canadian shorebirds and one of the most magnificent murmurations of Starlings in the whole country. For those with less mobility there is the option of retracing your steps on a bus or tram. This walk is best undertaken late afternoon on a high tide, to observe the Starling roost forming before dusk.

January might be a quiet month in the natural world but it’s the perfect time to resolve to pay more attention to the wildlife on our doorstep. Truth be told there isn’t usually anything new to see in Blackpool wildlife terms in January. Winter visitors remain ensconced, and even the earliest spring movements are still a few weeks off. But as in other walks of life the advent of a New Year is a time for resolutions and new habits, so this instalment of the almanac offers some suggestions.

A play about football and politics opened on the Grand Theatre’s stage last night – and the audience joined in on the action. As a football fan who studied politics in the 1990s, in which this play was set, I was intrigued by this Emmerson & Ward Production at the Grand Theatre, which promised to weave the politics of the post-industrial North East and Newcastle’s heroic failure in the 1995/96 Premier League season. If anything the experience was better than I could have hoped for.
