A man convicted of killing a young child and abusing another in Yolo County was sentenced this week to more than 15 years in prison on charges of voluntary manslaughter and assault. Derrick Dimone Woods, now 47, was accused of physically abusing the children — a 16-month-old girl and her 3-year-old brother — over several hours in February 2021, after their mother left them in Woods’ care at a West Sacramento motel, according to the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office.

The FBI on Thursday said it arrested a man in Sacramento wanted in connection to terrorist attacks across India. Harpreet Singh entered the United States unlawfully and had been trying to avoid arrest by using disposable phones and “encrypted applications,” the bureau’s Sacramento office said in a Facebook post. The FBI said he is suspected of working with Pakistan’s intelligence agency as well as Babbar Khalsa International, which the agency called a terrorist group.

3 hours agoTwo people were found dead Friday morning in a Sacramento home where, earlier, a police standoff ended with the peaceful arrest of an armed man, officials said. The Sacramento Police Department found a deceased man and woman, both with at least one gunshot wound. A man who was arrested after a standoff at home allegedly shot them.

The top attorney for a California board that enforces labor rules said Thursday that Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office may have violated state law over its handling of an order that many public employees return to the office four days a week. That decision came in response to a challenge by the Professional Engineers in California Government, a union that represents many Department of Transportation workers. That challenge was filed on March 4, a day after Newsom’s order.
