I took a walk through the beautiful campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island recently, as I was in the city for the annual gathering of the various editions of The Conversation. This project follows a devolved model, providing local leadership and engagement with the higher education and research sectors that support it in different parts of the world.

What do you know of Nottingham? A Forest, perhaps. Or a Sheriff. Those not from the fine city on the River Trent might argue over whether it is in the north or south of England – both geographically and culturally. I suspect its residents primarily and proudly identify as neither. Indeed the English region it inhabits asserts such independence from the national binary debate in its name – the “East Midlands”.

It was with great sadness that staff, Trustees and others across The Conversation community learned of the recent death of one of our UK patrons, Professor Sir Eric Thomas. Professor Sir Eric, a former Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Bristol, was instrumental in helping The Conversation become established in the UK, not only pledging the support of his institution, but encouraging other university leaders to do likewise.
