Institutions associated with publishing have announced lists of words that stand out from the previous year for one reason or another. Oxford University Press declared “brain rot” to be its “Word of the Year.” Apparently, brain rot indicates the negative effect on our cognitive abilities when subjected to the endless stream of language on social media, much of it ill-informed or worse.

I imagine few people know who Arthur Conan Doyle is. On the other hand, virtually everyone knows the name of the character he created. That would be Sherlock Holmes, who has appeared in all forms of print and other media from Broadway to big screen to television. Doyle left his struggling career as a doctor to find extraordinary popularity as a writer that brought him wealth and even a knighthood, making him Sir Arthur.

One of the lesser known American writers is largely responsible for one of our culture’s most well-known and beloved characters. I am speaking, of course, of Washington Irving and Santa Claus. Irving’s first name was bestowed on him at his birth in 1783, the year the Treaty of Paris ended our revolution. That he took that name seriously is attested to by the fact that toward the end of his life he wrote and published a massive biography of his namesake.

That headline said, “Voters to Elites: Do You See Me Now?”The word that interests me is “elites,” the plural of “elite” as a noun when applied to a class of people. So, let’s take a closer look because something a little odd seems to be happening.
