It’s a misty morning in Hong Kong. I’m traveling east in the backseat of an Uber, glass towers and green peaks forming an ethereal backdrop for the morning commute. I came to the region for a trade show. Global Sources, a business-to-business event, connects brands with manufacturers in verticals from baby products to outdoor gear. Its focus is upstarts and manufacturers, with camp chairs, hammocks, and pickleball racquets lining aisles that represent “made in China” in the flesh.

Gravity, speed, ice, and snow — the ingredients of a freestyle ski session are a recipe for adrenaline and possible disaster. Last season, my son learned the hard way by breaking a wrist on one of his first days out. At Christmas, he had a cast on his arm, and he was sidelined as his friends grabbed the rope tow at our local ski hill. This year, we’re upgrading Levi, age 11, head to toe in an attempt to keep him safer on the snow.
