In Citrus County, some 120 miles (193 kilometers) south of Perry, first responders were out in boats early Friday to rescue people trapped by the flooding. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Fast-moving Hurricane Helene was advancing Thursday across the Gulf of Mexico toward Florida, threatening an “unsurvivable” storm surge in northwestern parts of the state as well as damaging winds, rains and flash floods hundreds of miles inland across much of the southeastern U.S., forecasters said. Helene is expected to be a major hurricane — meaning a Category 3 or higher — when it makes landfall on Florida's northwestern coast Thursday evening.

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. — (AP) — A Florida sheriff's deputy announced himself as law enforcement just before fatally shooting a Black U.S. Air Force airman inside his apartment in the state's Panhandle, body camera video shown to reporters Thursday shows. Okaloosa County Sheriff Eric Aden presented the video hours after the family of Senior Airman Roger Fortson and their attorneys held a news conference in which they disputed that the deputy acted in self-defense.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Oct. 7 Hamas raid on Israel - and Israel's response - have led to demonstrations on college campuses that have sometimes turned violent. The unease is felt acutely at Tulane University in New Orleans, where 43% of students are Jewish. An Oct. 26 demonstration on a street running through campus erupted in violence between pro-Palestinian demonstrators and counter-demonstrators supporting Israel.
