Nintendo sues hackers, modders and other people who it believes encourage the piracy of its games not just to stop them but to fire a warning shot toward anyone else considering such things. In its pursuit of Switch hacker Gary Bowser, back in 2022, for example, an attorney for the Mario maker said the company had a “unique opportunity” to send a message to all gamers about video game piracy. It secured a $14.5 million judgment that Bowser will likely be paying back for the rest of his life.

How different should a video game sequel be from the game that came before it? Jakub Stokalskit, a 10-year veteran at the Polish game studio 11 Bit, was pondering that several years ago. He was winding down work on Frostpunk, the 2018 strategy game about building and managing New London, a desperate city on a damaged Earth, where temperatures could drop to worse than -100 Celsius. Players had really liked Frostpunk and the misery management inherent in the game.

I had Myst on my mind several weeks ago, when I was playing the role-playing game Avowed. I’d reached a cliff near the shore of this new fantasy role-playing game, looked out at an island and had a flashback to an old video game memory. This…… reminded me of this…Technically, though, it was just my imagination.

One of the most widely-reported stats about the video game industry last year was 61%. That’s the percentage of players’ time in 2023 that gamers spent playing video games that were released six or more years prior. The figure was calculated and published last year by Newzoo, the widely-referenced research firm whose stats about the size and performance of the game business are widely cited by the media and industry figures. Eurogamer wrote about that stat last April.
