The Tigers were expecting a tough fight out of the Lake Crystal-Wellcome-Memorial girls basketball Thursday during their home opener in Hutchinson. The Knights were ranked No. 7 in Class 2A in the first rankings of the year, but the Tigers (2-0) were on fire from the start as they took a 36-14 lead in the first half and went on to win 61-37. Five minutes went by before Lake Crystal scored its first points of the game, and Hutchinson had already built a 15-point lead.

Hutchinson nearly let a three-goal lead slip away, but it beared down and held on to beat Litchfield/DC, 3-2, in the first round of the Section 3A playoffs. The Tigers knew from its past two games with the Dragons this year that anything could happen, but this time they were prepared. “I thought our energy in the first period was key,” Hutchinson head coach Matt Telecky said. “We really came out and kept the puck deep, didn’t take chances, and they had to collapse.

Hutchinson volleyball cleaned up its hitting Tuesday and swept Mound-Westonka 3-0 in a Wright County Conference home match. The Tigers (7-11, 4-4 WCC) only had 10 hitting errors and kept it down to 38 errors total in the match. Hutch also blew the lowly White Hawks out of the water. Mound-Westonka has yet to win a conference match, and the Tigers jumped out to an early lead after winning the first two sets 25-10 and 25-19.

Happy Holidays, and I hope everyone had a pleasant 2013. As we count down the final days of this year and get ready for 2014, I like to take a look back and count down my top 10 news stories for Hutchinson sports. As always, this column is just for fun and doesn’t necessarily mean any one accomplishment is greater than another. Each of these stories, and others like them that didn’t make the list, are part of a greater whole of outstanding achievement by athletes in this community.

The Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team couldn’t pull off an upset Tuesday night in the Section 2AA-North playoffs as the Belle Plaine Tigers won 3-0 at Belle Plaine High School. The Panthers were feeling good after coming off their 3-game win over Holy Family Catholic in the first round of playoffs, and they hoped that moment carried over into the subsection semifinal. It wasn’t enough, though, as Belle Plaine swept them 25-17, 25-23 and 25-17.

A fresh dumping of snow may have chased Hutchinson’s track and field athletes back indoors, but they planned for that and were able to open competition with a pair of indoor meets this last Saturday and Monday. It was an exciting weekend as the Tigers not only kicked off their 2015 campaign, but they did it against great competition at the Minnesota State University-Mankato Indoor Showcase meet. This meet is invitation only, similar to the Elite Meet held every spring.

The North Star League season is over, and teams like the Hutchinson Huskies, who are legitimate contenders for one of the four state berths at the Region 12C tournament, have put the regular season behind them. But for fans and sports writers, now is the time to look back on the regular season and see how teams like the Huskies became such strong contenders. There is no doubt Hutchinson was led by its strong core of returning veterans.

It’s a new season for the Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart football team, and the biggest change by far for the Mustangs this year will be the move to 9-man football. After a combined 5-22 record over the past three years, head coach Brandon Neseth and the Mustangs are making the move with the goal of being more competitive. “The change to 9-man will be a nice shift for our program,” he said. “We will face new opponents, have a little more travel, but at the end of the day, football is football.
