The Blue Jays could get Max Scherzer back as soon as next week, writes Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. The future Hall of Famer tossed 74 pitches and punched out eight hitters — including a rehabbing Wilyer Abreu — in a rehab start against the Red Sox’ Triple-A affiliate this week. The Jays will need to see how Scherzer’s ailing thumb responds, but he’s built up and feels his stuff is where it needs to be.

Dodgers To Acquire Zach Penrod From Red Sox By Steve Adams | June 20, 2025 at 1:37pm CDT The Dodgers and Red Sox have agreed to a trade that’ll send left-hander Zach Penrod from Boston to Los Angeles, reports Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. The Sox designated Penrod for assignment earlier this week in the wake of the Rafael Devers blockbuster, as they were acquiring two 40-man players (Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison) and only trading away one. The White Sox, sporting a 23-52 record, will operate as deadline sellers once again. They don’t have as much to offer as many other potential sellers around the league — partly because they’ve already sold off many desirable assets earlier in this rebuild but also due to the significant salaries of some of their remaining veterans.

Loved Baez getting some redemption early in the season, but it always looked pretty suspect — .398 BABIP, 4% walk rate, well below average contact rates, poor batted-ball quality — and now he’s hitting .189/.200/.257 since mid-May.

New at ESPN: The Tigers are in first place and Javier Baez is (finally) contributing to their success. More on the return of El Mago. "People wanted to give up on Javy...He's probably one of the top three most special players I've witnessed live." https://t.co/wWV7v2RPzB

Weird to see an in-season non-tender, but since Groome was on ineligible list he wasn’t able to be tendered or non-tendered in November. Padres had to wait until reinstatement to make a formal call Since it’s a NT rather than DFA, he immediately becomes a free agent. No waivers

With his one-year suspension ending today, the Padres are non-tendering Jay Groome. Groome is out of minor-league options.

The #Cubs are signing right-hander Jake Woodford to a minor league deal, per source. He’ll head to Triple-A Iowa and start there tomorrow night.
