A Red Flag Warning has been issued across the Northwoods. Warmer than normal temperatures, breezy south winds, plus the very dry air and ground will lead to more EXTREME wildfire danger across northern Wisconsin. Fire danger is also HIGH across the Fox Valley and the Lakeshore. We strongly recommend avoiding any outdoor burning. Folks should also be careful using items that can accidentally throw a spark, like grills and chainsaws.

A Frost Advisory will soon expire at 8am. Its excludes the Northwoods where the growing season has yet to begin. Daybreak temperatures are mostly in the 30s and hopefully gardeners heeded our First Alerts to cover their cold-sensitive plants. Despite the cold start, we’re expecting a much warmer afternoon. More sunshine, dry air, and the return of a light southwest breeze will push our inland high temperatures into the lower-half of the 70s. Lakeshore towns will see cooler highs in the 50s and 60s.

Our most recent weathermaker is moving away from us. Any leftover cloud cover will be fading away this morning. As our skies brighten up, inland high temperatures will warm into the comfortable 70s. Meanwhile, the lakeshore will be cooler, with highs reaching the 60s. Weak high pressure drifts away tonight, allowing a “back door” cold front to slide in from the north. As northeast winds blow behind this boundary, our temperatures will cool down into the midweek.

After a dry weekend, there’s a chance of spotty rain today. The same weathermaker that brought the Northwoods showers last Friday, will wobble back towards Wisconsin today. As a result, we’ll see more clouds, with a few light showers drifting in from Lake Michigan. With an increase of clouds and a northeast breeze around our wobbling weathermaker, today’s temperatures will be a little cooler by the Bay and the lakeshore.

After getting a brief break from the rain last night, showers have returned this morning. A wave of low pressure aloft is driving this second wave of rain across the Northwoods. Some wet snow will also fly across western Upper Michigan today. Even though it’s May, a slushy coating can’t be ruled out in some spots. Otherwise, look for these light rain showers to diminish this evening. Lingering cloud cover will help keep our temperatures cooler than average for early May.
