Ian Hickling, who was a radio consultant, engineer and owner of Transplan UK, has died at the age of 85 following an illness. From Irthlingborough, Ian served as a Flying Officer with the Royal Airforce between 1958 and 2005. He set up Transplan UK in 1987 to explore and promote all aspects of radio, specialising in transmission and launching stations. The company also advised on the legal and financial aspects of the industry.

RedArmy Group has confirmed it is to apply for the small-scale DAB multiplex licence for Stockton-on-Tees. The licence, which will cover around 175,000 adults, was advertised by Ofcom as part of its Round 7 of licensing. RedArmy Group Managing Director Dave Roberts says the sub-region has been a challenge to find the right transmitter locations: “Stockton is a relatively flat area. It doesn’t enjoy the higher ground other Teesside areas has, so finding the right sites has been tricky.

Hits Radio’s Fleur East is joining the cast of the hit West End production Tina – The Tina Turner Musical to play Tina Turner. She will share the role alongside one of its current stars, Karis Anderson. The musical, which today extended booking until 10 January 2026, marks Fleur’s West End and theatrical debut as she performs in the musical from Tuesday 24 June to Saturday 13 September 2025.

Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2025 will include performances from Radio 1 Anthems acts for the first time. This new addition to the festival is on the back of the Radio 1 Anthems extension which launched on BBC Sounds last November. The station is for young listeners to discover and re-discover music and artists played by Radio 1 throughout the 2000s and 2010s. Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2025 takes place in Sefton Park, Liverpool from Friday 23rd May – Sunday 25th May.
