May 29—Harvard University senior Victoria Bossong of Cumberland (Cheverus) took a step toward qualifying for the NCAA track and field championships by running the sixth fastest time Thursday in the first round of the women's 800 meters at the East Regional in Jacksonville, Florida. Bossong finished second in her heat with a time of 2 minutes, 2.39 seconds to advance to Saturday's three quarterfinal heats.

May 25—The suddenness was shocking. Liam Scholl should have been with his Brunswick High baseball teammates at a team dinner on April 17, laughing, joking and getting excited about the season opener that was just five days away. AdvertisementBut when a teammate called to ask when he was coming to the restaurant, Liam said his father was on the floor and not breathing. Michael Scholl, the generous man known for cheering on every Brunswick player, died in the family's Brunswick home.

May 14—YORK — The Greely High baseball team was looking to quickly bounce back from Monday's loss at Lake Region. The Rangers, ranked No. 4 in the latest Varsity Maine poll, sure did that Wednesday at No. 9 York. Sophomore shortstop Kyle Soule slugged two home runs and junior right-hander Gehrig Donnelly was sharp on the mound, throwing a 98-pitch four-hitter in an 11-1 Class B South victory.
