In 1981, civil rights leader the Rev. Ben Chavis coined the phrase “environmental racism” after he was arrested for protesting North Carolina’s decision to dump tons of toxic waste in poor, predominantly Black Warren County. Six weeks of demonstrations failed to stop the toxic dump, but the publicity sparked a movement that’s now known as environmental justice. North Carolina’s governor Jim Hunt eventually apologized, but it took until 2004 before the PCBs in Warren County were finally cleaned up.

Green spaces tend to be harder to come by in communities of color, one of the many consequences of redlining, the racist practice of denying mortgages to Black families. And Black and brown people often feel unsafe and unwelcome in wilderness and park areas dominated by white recreators. In a 2020 incident that went viral, a white woman called the police on a Black man who was birding in Central Park in New York City, sparking awareness about racism in outdoor spaces.

Air Date: Week of As the UN Climate Summit in Dubai heads towards its scheduled final day on Tuesday, December 12, delegates have yet to achieve consensus for the Global Stock take. That’s a report on progress meeting the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement, which aspires to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. A majority of delegates and climate advocates say there is insufficient progress to meet those goals and want COP28 to find consensus to adopt additional measures.
