Last week was a landmark moment for me as I asked in my very first Prime Minister's Questions. With the tourist season on the horizon, I seized the opportunity to address the impact of Employer's National Insurance Contributions and increases on Torbay's tourism sector. I invited the Prime Minister to visit Paignton Zoo to hear from himself the impact of these increases. Since the NIC hike was announced last year, I’ve been vocal about its detrimental effects on our tourism industry.

With Parliament in recess for Easter, I’ve had the pleasure of spending last week enjoying the spring sunshine right here in Torbay. This break has been a wonderful opportunity to catch-up in person with my constituency staff team, hold important meetings with organisations like South West Water, and visit some of the fantastic community events happening across our beautiful bay.

As we step into the new financial year, I do so with concern for the future, especially after the government’s disappointing Spring Statement. This was a missed opportunity to deliver the change our community desperately needs. Instead of scrapping the jobs tax and reforming business rates, the Chancellor has chosen a path that will deepen the challenges we face. From April 6, taxes on small businesses will rise due to the increase in employers’ national insurance contributions.
