There is frankly an enormous amount to learn about being a judge that can only be learned through the actual practice of judicial duties. Fortunately, Minnesota has an exceptionally strong judicial education program.

I trace my interest in our justice system back to reading former Winona County, Minnesota, Judge Dennis Challeen’s columns in the Winona Daily News. Judge Challeen lived in a floating cabin anchored to an island on the backwaters of the Mississippi River. We call them boathouses in Winona, not houseboats, which are “river-fairing” boats with motors that have onboard temporary living quarters. Boathouses are semi-permanent floating structures. But I digress.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, most countries have witnessed a rapid runup in inflation followed by hasty retreat. For some nations, the trips been a wild rollercoaster ride, a lurching ascent towards a summit where the houses below look like Monopoly pieces, followed by a steep, head-spinning drop. For others, the journey has resembled a snowmobiles wintry climb up a low, sloping hill, and the gliding descent down the other side. Only the general, up-and-down pattern is the same.
