Motor Transport caught up with Glyn Davies recently and amongst other things the subject of Culina came up. Davies was quite clearly upset and disappointed by what had taken place last year. In his view there were a number of ill-judged decisions which undermined the hard work and commitment of a fantastic management team and their efforts spanning 30 years.

SDC Trailers was established 45 years ago by welder and fabricator Seamus McCloy in a small tin shed unit beside his house in the village of Bellaghy, Northern Ireland. The firm grew rapidly and in 1982 McCloy acquired his first factory in nearby Toomebridge, Co Antrim. This site is known today as Plant 1 and is home to the group’s headquarters. In 1982 there were 17 full-time employees; today there are nearly 900.

Battery electric vehicles are sometimes regarded as new-fangled devices but they were first seen on the roads of Europe in the 1890s and in the 1960s the UK had the world’s largest fleet of BEVs in the days when electric milk floats were a common sight on every street. Today home delivery operator Milk & More still runs 400 BEVs in its fleet of 1,200 delivery vans.

The sixth annual ‘Road to zero’ report from vehicle rental association the BVRLA painted a gloomy picture of the progress toward zero-emission commercial vehicles, though it said the “future looks brighter” for electric trucks as a result of the government-funded ‘Zero emission HGV and infrastructure demonstrator’ (Zehid) programme.
On vans, the 2024 report said: “Facing enormous headwinds, the zero-emission van transition is in crisis.

Renault Trucks has introduced an anti-rollaway device as an option for its Range T, C and K trucks with electronic park brakes. Commercial director Nigel Butler said the system automatically applies the park brake if the driver’s door is opened with the vehicle moving at less than 3km/h. It has been in development for a number of years following requests from operators, but concerns over accidental deployment at higher speeds meant the launch was delayed while adequate safeguards were built in.
