The classic 1980s kids movie “The Goonies” begins with the premise of a house being acquired so that a golf course in an Oregon town can be expanded, which in itself is unusual because normally that scenario plays out the other way around. The foreclosure doesn’t wind up happening, of course, as the kids save the day. Perhaps the movie was golf’s precursor to the cult 1997 Australian film “The Castle”, in which we learned the importance of acquiring and repurposing land “on just terms”.

When Royal Fremantle returned to our biennial ranking of Australia’s Top 100 Golf Courses last year after a 26-year absence, it was less of a surprise and more of an overdue recognition. Both renovation efforts received high praise upon their return.

He wasn’t even supposed to be in the field, yet Melbourne’s Steve Allan converted a late call-up into a popular and poignant victory at the PGA Tour Champions’ Galleri Classic in California. The 51-year-old closed with a 67 to reach 15-under and edge Tag Ridings by a shot to win for the first time in 28 starts on the over-50s circuit that is now flush with Australian representatives.

The late Bill Davis, a co-founder of the American edition of Golf Digest, once observed that great golf courses are often found in clusters. Think of the Melbourne Sandbelt, the heathland courses outside London, New York’s Long Island collection and, of course, seemingly any stretch of coastal linksland you like in Great Britain and Ireland. Each course in a cluster, Davis theorised, utilises common topography while earning individual distinction.
