Thursday May 22, 1:00 PMDespite weather predictions, it’s not raining now in NYC. I’ve got about two hours before I head for JFK Airport to start a two-week run of dates in the U.K. and Europe with Blue Öyster Cult. Having just come off the first leg of the Spring/Summer ’25 tour with Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks, I’m using the feeble remains of my brains cells to recall what I haven’t yet packed. The biggies are securely in my backpack: passport, carnet for the gear and a bunch of personal stuff.

I recently worked a show at the Riviera Theatre in North Tonawanda, N.Y., a venue I’ve visited several times in the past few years. The venue has slowly been making significant upgrades, some technical and some related to the building itself. But there’s one “upgrade” that’s been ongoing continuously for more than 75 years, and it makes the Riviera Theatre special.

The AEA 1029 is a compact (1RU, half-rack width), two-channel VCA compressor employing a combination of VCAs configured in a feed-forward topology, Fred Forssell discrete op-amps featuring a complementary pair of new old stock Toshiba JFETs, and ultra-low-noise, low-distortion op-amps.

Recently introduced from the folks at RF Venue is the CP Stage Antenna, a rugged, IP-rated, high-performance antenna intended for use with wireless microphones and IEM systems. The CP Stage can be operated in the UHF range between 470 and 928 MHz, covering 470 to 698 MHz in North America, 823 to 832 and 863 to 865 MHz in Europe, and the 902 to 928 MHz ISM band.

The WSG-PY64 enables Waves plug-ins to be integrated with Yamaha DM7 mixers, supporting 64 channels at sample rates from 44.1 to 96 kHz with ultra-low latency (0.8 mS), while allowing parallel recording, or playback and processing.

File this one under “we almost didn’t make the gig.” Here’s the setup…On Thursday, March 27, we had a show at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee. The following day we’d be at the Robins Theatre in Warren, Ohio, which is about an hour from Cleveland. Flying from Milwaukee to Cleveland sounds simple, but the reality is that you can’t fly nonstop, and even with a connection, we’d arrive in Cleveland way too late for a show day.
