Spend a little time with Gary Anderson and you’re apt to conclude that the guy has all the attributes of a natural-born entertainer: big smile, massive moustache, big personality, booming voice, gifted storyteller—and a huge laugh. In fact, early in his adult life Anderson spent a fair bit of time on stage—playing drums and providing backing vocals while touring with aspiring Canadian rock bands Hellhound, Fable, and Task Force.

Nothing has helped me see the world in a clearer way than actually getting out and seeing it. Learning about the history of a place through its people, cultural traditions and landscape is incredibly enriching, and for me the most profound example of this has been the Indigenous tourism experiences I’ve had. On a trip to Clayoquot Sound off Vancouver Island, I learned that Canada’s Indigenous Peoples have a deep, reciprocal relationship with the land that emphasizes stewardship and sustainability.

I feel a sense of awe and wonderment as I stand at the base of the Cedar Tree of Life on Meares Island in British Columbia. It’s almost unfathomable to imagine that this tree has lived in this particular spot for an estimated 1300 years. As I crane my neck in an attempt to see the top of the magnificent specimen of western red cedar, I think about all that has happened over those 13 centuries and marvel at something having lived for that length of time.
