On Wednesday night, I got to play in the Congressional Basketball Game. Coaches from both sides anxiously paced the sidelines, issuing last-second commands to press forward. The fans were energized, encouraging their respective teams’ star players. As the clock wound down and fatigue rose, play on the field became increasingly desperate and chaotic.

Just as we have an obesity crisis, we also have an attentional health crisis. There is no denying American health is in trouble. Forty percent of us are obese. More than seventy percent are overweight. America ranks last among comparable countries in life expectancy. Our maternal and infant mortality rate is among the highest of developed nations. More Americans report deep loneliness than ever. These are but a few of many scary statistics we could cite. On whole, Americans are not doing well. This isn’t new. America has been trending toward worsening health for years.

Young men are struggling. Look at the data. It’s not pretty:Education: There is a significant gap in high school graduation rates and college enrollments. Women graduate college at significantly higher rates than men in every state in America. Mental Health: the suicide rate for men is four times that of women. Intimate Relationships: Nearly half of male teens have never dated, almost double the rate of previous generations.

The Detroit Tigers are one of the youngest, hottest teams in baseball, maybe even all of sports. The average age on the big league team is just 26.7 years old, and the farm system is full of prospects as young as 18. Midway through the season, it looked like the team was in a building phase—the youthful talent were getting solid reps, but the playoffs weren’t in consideration. At the all star break, the Detroit Tigers had record of 44-49. They were ranked 24 out of 30 in the ESPN power rankings.
