SCROLL DOWN TO READ ARTICLE I have been writing throughout this month at BaltimoreBaseball.com and really have enjoyed and appreciated very much the forum I was provided here. Some fans and readers may have seen my announcement Thursday of a move for me to Substack and that move has been made. Readers moving forward can find me at Steveonbaseball.Substack.com.

SCROLL DOWN TO READ ARTICLE Having covered a few spring trainings over a few years, not all days in the Florida sun are created equal, nor are all the games. Some are very forgettable and nothing happens of much significance. Some can be more fun for fans, especially when watching some of the young players. Sunday was one of those days when the Orioles won, 7-3, in Clearwater against the Philadelphia Phillies.

SCROLL DOWN TO READ ARTICLE Now that he has had 208 big league plate appearances, batting .189/.255/.311/.565 at age 20 with the Orioles last year, it can be easy to forget that everybody ranked Jackson Holliday as MLB’s No. 1 prospect heading into last season. He had played the 2023 season – his first full year in the minors – starting at Single-A Delmarva and rising three levels to end the year at Triple-A Norfolk.

SCROLL DOWN TO READ ARTICLE For a pitcher who was not even drafted, but signed as a free agent after the 2023 MLB Draft, O’s right-hander Trey Gibson has been getting noticed a lot lately. The 22-year-old is ranked as the club’s No. 12 prospect (and their fourth highest-rated pitcher) by Baseball America and No. 13 by The Athletic. In addition, ESPN named him as one of 12 players currently outside of its top 150 national prospects who could break into the top 100 list.

SCROLL DOWN TO READ ARTICLE For the National Hockey League, the 4 Nations Face-Off was a huge hit. People were talking about hockey, casual fans were watching games and television ratings for the USA versus Canada games were outstanding. The tournament – featuring NHL players on teams from the United States, Canada, Finland and Sweden – replaced the NHL All-Star weekend. Could baseball hold a similar event around the time of the All-Star Game? Yes, but it might be hard to pull that off.

Spoke to Kyle Gibson tdy…. Very optimistic and feels good after getting built up in Sarasota. Said he expects to be “the ace” of the staff and wants to take the ball every 5th day. When asked on his personal goals he told me “a 2.4 era, and 200 k’s is what I’m aiming for.”
