It is obvious in the cold harsh light of January—as it was even back in the dimmer warmth of late autumn—that the 2024 Hamilton Tiger-Cats were not good enough. Not nearly good enough. And it wasn’t limited to last season, when an injury-and-turnover-plagued 2-9 start doomed a strong closing two months to too little, too late.

As 2024 comes to a close, Tim Hortons and Hamilton Sports Group are celebrating the impact of the inaugural stadium naming rights agreement that helped build and launch Tim Hortons Field. Since it opened, the stadium has played host to over 250 premium sports and entertainment events, which attracted three million live attendees. It has also seen over 10,000 hours of community activity and has been used to raise more than $3 million for charity.

Sometimes the road not taken leads to recognizing the road you were meant to take. And that road has brought Brent Monson all the way back home. “It was definitely interesting driving down to the facility today,” says the newly-minted Tiger-Cats defensive coordinator, who becomes a key member of head coach Scott Milanovich’s staff. “I thought of all the times that I was driving down to football games at Ivor Wynne or going to coach somewhere near Ivor Wynne. It was awesome, just taking the drive in.

It’s the time of year for generosity and the time of year for thankfulness. That also makes it the perfect time of year to reflect on the impact the Hamilton Sports Group has had on the community. And the numbers are remarkable. In 2024, cooperating with corporate partners and community organizations, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Forge FC—the two professional franchises owned by HSG—combined to help raise, in various forms, over $1 million that went back into the community.

His football journey has taken him to both coasts, and points in between, but Ted Goveia has finally circled back home. The Burlington native, who played his high school ball at Assumption Secondary School and eventually coached there, is the Tiger-Cats’ new general manager. After much speculation amongst the national football media, Goveia was officially appointed on Thursday after a search led by President of Football Operations Orlondo Steinauer chose him over about a dozen other candidates.
