The Awkward Gun

The announcement trailer for this brand new sequel to The Naked Gun series was strong. The gags were absurd, the style hilariously cinematic, the casting of Liam Neeson to succeed Leslie Neilsen a stroke of genius. But a fresh trailer has arrived shaping the image of this slapstick movie as more focused on the gag than on the laugh. We’re not used to slapstick anymore either, but I do commend The Lonely Island for fully going for it.

Good to see you again, Mel Brooks. We certainly weren’t expecting you to announce a sequel to Spaceballs after nearly 4 decades. Or For Rick Moranis to step out of a 3 decade hiatus to come back as Dark Helmet. But don’t hold your breath, we won’t see this sequel arrive until 2027. The announcement is a fantastic tongue-in-cheek letter crawl through space listing SO MANY mega movie franchise sequels and prequels and spin-offs and tie-ins and remakes and rehashes and reinterpretations blah blah blah.
The Age of the ‘Tickets On Sale’ Trailers

It seems like an increasingly common thing for major blockbuster movies to not only announce when tickets are on sale, but to release a brand new trailer to help spread the ticket news. At least they aren’t also blighted by a 3-5 second micro trailer at the start of the trailer. We will never need trailers for trailers, ok?! I digress. We got a fresh look at James Gunn’s Superman with their new Tickets-On-Sale trailer above.
Oil Barons Jersey Design Contest

(And parents of said students)The Fort McMurray Oil Barons are holding a new jersey design contest, with a chance to win a custom jersey to keep if your design is selected as well as another jersey for your school to display and a $500 scholarship for good measure. There are a few stipulations, and of course the designs will need to be appropriate, but there’s a lot of time to thing about that perfect image.

Despite today (and really last night) being the launch day for the Nintendo Switch 2, this trailer has risen far higher on the trending videos list than any other on YouTube right now. It’s called “First Light”, which fits on many levels.
Stranger Things Final Dates Announced

11’s going to be 111 by the time they finish this show. Fans largely disliked the concept of waiting longer for more episodes, as we’ve seen with some previous new-season roll outs. But if the episode runtimes of the last season or so are anything to go off of, some are longer than a movie! So we might need the time between volumes just to have a chance at being up to date. In any case, that’s a winter-us problem to figure out. Just watch the teaser.

I’ve been going to nerdy conventions in Alberta for many years, and since the very first one I’ve been fascinated by cosplayers. Sure, there’s the T&A factories associated with cosplay all over the internet, but I’m more talking about the people who show up at conventions dressed up as characters or mash-ups or memes and elevate the experience for everyone around them.

This has fascinated me for decades. Every year dozens of people sign up to throw themselves down a steep-ass hill in the UK to be the first to catch a wheel of double gloucester cheese that was just rolled down the hill in front of them. Winner keeps the cheese. It’s like a pack of wolves with absolutely no coordination running down a rabbit. There are injuries every year, but amazingly there aren’t many and people seem to generally walk away unbroken – though absolutely roughed up and bone-rattled.

You mission, should you choose to accept it, is to check out the behind-the-scenes clips of Tom Cruise hanging from an upside down plane for “Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning”. AKA Dead Reckoning Part 2, but when initial attendance to the first “Dead Reckoning” was lukewarm, they pivoted to making both directly-connected films seem like standalones. Action movie junkies don’t care about the title, though. They care about the thrill. That’s something Tom Cruise is very good at crafting.

Usually when the second or even third trailer for a movie arrives the viewers will finally get some context and some idea of story. Not so much for Jurassic World: Rebirth’s follow-up trailer, and I suspect that’s because there really isn’t all that much story in there. If seeing folks running from dinosaurs for whatever reason is what you’re after, however, you’re going to do really well with this one when it arrives July 2nd. I’ll see you there.
