If you’ve used your income tax refund over the years to buy Series I inflation savings bonds as gifts for the kids or grandkids, you need a new plan. The Treasury Department ended its tax-season savings-bond program at the beginning of this year. The strategy was the last way to buy the paper version of I bonds, as inflation savings bonds are commonly called. Savers can still buy the digital I bonds through the government’s TreasuryDirect program.
