We should have celebrated all that he was and could have been. But the marriage between athlete and community got lost in playoff instability, the relationship between star and its hopeful fanbase tripped all over itself until time ran out and there was no place to go for counselling. Toronto adored the best of little Gilmour because of all he gave and because he was never better or bigger than when circumstances required him the most. Toronto adored the fight in Clark, the combustion in his game.

He chose three players intentionally to ask a simple question: Who is the best coach you ever played for? One player was an NHL star. One player was an NHL also-ran. That’s what you call value spending. For the past seven years, John Tavares, at $11 million per season, has been the second highest paid player overall in the NHL. He has been paid $77 million for his time with the Maple Leafs. In those seven seasons, he has been the 24th highest scorer, 16th in goals scored, 38th in assists during the regular season, reasonable numbers all of them. What hasn’t been so reasonable: Tavares ranks 90th overall in hockey in playoff scoring since he came to the Leafs.

And my favourite Barenaked Ladies song: Brian Wilson.

Brian Wilson, disturbed genius, game changer in the recording industry, giant of Beach Boys fame, dead at the age of 82. I think I've seen the Beach Boys at least five times live - and Brian wasn't there for all the shows. But the music was his, the music remains as magic.
