He was going to do what he had done in the past — swap one pick and get two or three back in return. It was his way of trying to make sense of having so few draft choices at the time. He was about to agree to the deal when his chief scout, Wes Clark, ostensibly said no. Not all scouts would be brave enough to speak up in a situation like this one. Some would defer to the power of the general manager. Some wouldn’t fight back.
