    Canada is facing a “polycrisis” in primary care. People not having a family doctor,1 the weight of administrative tasks in family practice,2 family doctors feeling burned out,3 and the financial viability of family practices4 are among the issues that define the crisis.

    In reflecting on this month’s Canadian Family Physician article entitled “Changes in comprehensiveness of services delivered by Canadian family physicians. Analysis of population-based linked data in 4 provinces”1 and the related commentary entitled “Ending the generational blame game. Let us move forward with needed primary care change,”2 we note that the authors bring much-needed expertise to the study of comprehensive family medicine care.

    AbstractContext: Canada under-invests in research related to primary care. Most Canadians (86%) have a regular care provider and family physicians deliver 54% of all medical services. However, primary care research accounts for less than 3% of grant funding within Canada’s largest health research funding agency, the Canadian Institute for Health Research (CIHR). This disconnect calls for further study of primary care research investment.
